Extract from the diary of Margery May Barrett
From: Letter in the AtticIn her diary entries for June 2 and 3 MMB writes in 1940 that she heard Admiral Beamish speak at a Conservative meeting, he said that they should ‘stay put’ and not go ‘dashing about’. In 1941 there were alerts in the night and bombs in the distance. In 1943 MMB writes of the allied war attacks on Germany and Italy and writes that there are rumours of preparations for an allied invasion of Italy. In 1944 MMB said that there was a ‘Rumour Montgomery is at Firle’ . To this MMB has added in brackets that this ‘proved true later!’. MMB also writes in 1944 of going to Kingston for tea with Joan Chester. The road was closed at intervals for tanks. MMB notes she ‘had to run!’.
