From: Letter in the AtticIn her diary entries for June 16 and 17 MMB writes in 1940 that no church bells are to ring except in an emergency, she prayed for France. The next day MMB writes that France asked Germany for an armistice. In 1942 MMB writes of disappointing news from Libya – the troops are retreating. She also attended a Civil Defence rally for women at which the Mayor spoke. The 16th June 1944 was a noisy night with three sirens, MMB notes that the Nazi’s have a new secret weapon, a pilotless plane. In 1943 the King was in North Africa to congratulate the troops on their victories. In 1944 the King and Churchill both visit Normandy
