Extract from the diary of Margery May Barrett
From: Letter in the AtticIn her diary entries for July 4 and 5 MMB writes in 1940 that the ‘South Coast from Hastings to Portland is now a defence area and as it stretches 20 miles inland Lewes must be included’. In 1941 MMB writes of going shopping and only managing to get one 1 egg each. Fruit and potatoes were very scarce and shopping was very time consuming. In 1942 the Russians withdraw from Sebastopol and the Duchess of Kent has another son, MMB writes that she wishes Princess Elizabeth had a brother. In 1944 the Russians take Minsk and a flying bomb was brought down near Falmer.
