Papers of Frederick George Stoner (1894-1916) and Frederick Arthur Langridge (1914-1979) of Brighton
From: Letter in the AtticFrederick George Stoner served as a Private in the First World War and was killed on 28 October 1916 in France. There are postcards from FGS to his sisters (Kathleen Mary Langridge, née Stoner, and Ellen Simmonds, née Stoner) and to his mother Clara Stoner. There is a letter from the Commonweath War Graves Commission in 1968 saying that FGS’s grave is unknown, but his name is inscribed on a memorial in Thiepval in France. There are photographs and a postcard of Thiepval and photographs of a memorial at Stanford Road Infants School, Brighton, where FGS was a pupil.
The archive also contains papers relating to Frederick Arthur Langridge who married Frederick George Stoner’s sister, Kathleen Mary Langridge, in 1940. The papers include a school certificate and report for FAL, a wedding photo, a list of wedding presents, and a greetings telegram to the bride and groom. FAL served as a Private in the Second World War and was reported missing in November 1942. The papers include a telegram from the Infantry Record Office informing KML that her husband was missing and a telegram from FAL to KML advising that he was in hospital. In 1944, FAL was stationed at Monastery Internment Camp near Jerusalem and the 1944 Christmas Day menu, signed by FAL’s companions, is included in the collection.
