A Rave from the Grave

Flyer for Big Apple

I don’t know what year this was – Do you?

Were you lucky enough to see any of the shows?

T Rex and Status Quo would have been my choice – I was madly in love with Marc Bolan and Francis Rossi.

  • 1970/71 I would guess.

  • The Big Apple was only open from October 1970 until April 1971 so this has to be around Christmas 1970.

  • I saw Tyrannosaurus Rex there and I also went to the Curved Air concert there on 2nd Jan 1971, I would have been just a few days short of my 17th birthday! I saw many other bands there.

At this time Tyrannosaurus Rex must have been on the cusp of changing to T Rex, as I think I saw them there under this name as well. Someone might correct me, did they swap to electric glam rock under the original name for some months before changing the name as well?

  • They changed their name to ‘T Rex’ with the release of ‘Ride a White Swan.’
I think that that was some time in 1971.
That single, incidentally, was the first to be produced in ‘stereo.’
As an aside, and nothing to do with any of this, I’ve still got a copy of ‘My people were Fair’ by Tyrannosaurus Rex from 1968. It’s never been out of its sleeve.

  • Mine’s never been back in its sleeve since purchased ( My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair, But Now They’re Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows) played it to death!

  • I worked that night as a glass collector, one way to see groups for free ! T-Rex was positioned far right from the stage, not easy to view as the band was not positioned well, due to no stage elevation.
Status Quo did perform on the stage but were not so well received, early days for them and not too popular with the T-Rex fans. They wore tartan trousers and white flouncy frilly shirts , not the image they portrayed in later years.

  • I saw East of Eden on Christmas Eve, it was snowing when we came out. I was feeling very cool wearing my mum’s fur coat.
