Class photograph c1957~ 1958

Found this shot when I was sorting through some old photos.

I think I was in the third year at Cottesmore St Mary’s School c1957/58?  Mr Harvey was our teacher.

Have I got the year right? Do you recognise yourself or anyone else? Please share your memories by posting a comment below.

  • I recognise Mr Harvey, although he looks younger than when he taught me Art at Cottesmore between 1965/70.

  • Wow, doesn’t Mr Harvey look young then! But still recognised him straight away!

  • Myke, 1957/8 is only 7 or 8 years before we started, he probably didn’t change much between then and 1965.  I guess he looked old to a lot of 12 year-olds, but actually was probably only in his early 30s, or half my age now!  But I agree with you, I remember an “older Mr Harvey”!

  • Hi Maureen, I came across this photo today. I’m one of Terry Harvey’s 5 sons, all of whom (and our sister) now live in Australia. He looks so young in this photo! My Dad will be celebrating his 90th birthday on 6 April 2016. He now lives in a retirement home in Brisbane, and still has fond memories of his years at Cottesmore and all his students there. I have read out to him, everyone’s kind comments, which he greatly enjoys.

  • Hi Simon, So good to hear from you and glad your Dad is keeping well and enjoying comments of our time at Cottesmore. You certainly all are in a lovely part of the world. I only wish there were more of us keeping in touch on this site.  Unfortunately I haven’t seen anyone from our class since I left in 1960 and often wonder what paths they travelled in life.  All the best, Michael Whelan.

  • Hi Micheal my name is Clarissa Granger (nee Smith), you may not remember me I am from India – I remember your name. I now live in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. I also was happy at Cottesmore – yes, the teachers were great, Mr Joyce etc. By the way I am registered on this site in my husband’s name.

  • Hello Michael, good to see all the comments about our class photo. I’m 3rd row from the front standing behind Elizabeth Holloway. Two of the girls in the 2nd row from the front were twins? My surname was Kelly back then.

  • Although there are not many photos of the years when I attended Cottesmore, I loved the primary school for the short time I was there and remember Mr Joyce very well.  I do also remember Mr Harvey in the secondary school. All in all the primary school was one of the best and my most happy time of memories as a child.

  • Oh my goodness.  I remember Mr Harvey very well.  I was hopeless at art until we did Art Appreciation.  Hi Cathy Cullen – I remember you.  Funny – I liked Mr White!

    By Patricia Hartshorn (Knight) (18/11/2016)
  • Hi Patricia, yes I think I remember you also.  Maybe you were fortunate enough not to see how Mr White treated his pupils, too long ago to angst over now.  Hope you are doing well. Do you remember Edwina elCombe and also the McAtamey sisters, Sally Franklin and Heather Lefebour (who turned out splitting image of Catherine Zeta Jones!). Gosh are we getting old or what! God bless.

  • Well was I surprised to come across this photo. The boy in the second row next to Mr Harvey was Fitzpatrick who was always going to be a priest.I remember Miss Hays, a very fervent RI teacher. I remember drawing in biro a tiny picture of Elvis on the bottom gold stripe of my tie and I received three wacks and had to write out the Beatitudes. We had great pleasure in writing a competition about teachers’ nick names, hers being Gabby.

  • Hi to all
I was in miss Fitzpatrick’s class left in 1961, such a long time ago it’s hard to remember anyone by name except Ann, I believe her surname was surle or something like that.
School for me was so hard all I did was look out of the window and longed to travel, and I did, all my learning took place on the road of life, I now live on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. my name was Susan Spencer. I would love to hear from anyone from that time.

  • Does anyone remember either Kathleen Salter or Olive Royston who both attended the then Sacred Heart Convent in the 1950s. I am Janet Kerner (nee Martin)
Please leave a message if you have any idea if they are still alive.

  • I was born in Farnham Surrey in June 1941 but my mother was evacuated to give birth. We moved to Brighton in 1944 and I started School at St Mary Magdalene 1946 and went to Cottesmore St Marys Primary School in 1951. I started the following year At the Sacred Heart Secondary School and stayed there until 1955 when we left Brighton. I usually spent the summers away as my parent worked on the Isle of Wight in the Summers. I remember moving into the new school but was only there for one year. The thing I remember was how efficiently Mr Smith the Headmaster could give you the strap. Nowadays I live in Spain.

  • Re Cottesmore.
Hi Terry Onyett. My mother was also evacuated in 1942 from Palmers Green to a beautiful hospital in Northampton to give birth as all the mums were moved out for safety. We moved to Brighton in 1952. Brighton was such a beautiful place then. Madeira Drive was in excellent condition, the greenery on the walls on Madeira Drive had not been vandalised then by an ignorant council, there were fabulous gardens on the lower Promenade, hardly any cars! I attended Cottesmore after the Sacred Heart Convent in 1953. I also remember getting the strap from the lovely Mr Smith as I had fallen asleep in class. I am afraid I got the giggles as the strap came down on my hand and this made poor Mr Smith even more cross so I had a few more helpings. When I got outside the school in Radinden Manor Road – still a bit giggly – I found a group of about 8 of my school friends waiting for me. Happy Days!
