The Iron Duke

A busy life

My partner and I were landlords of this popular pub in Waterloo Street, during the late 1980’s. It was a far busier life than we had expected. The pub was a hotel too, with twelve bedrooms which were always full at weekends in the summer. Whilst in the pub, I became aware of school groups visiting the area with their teachers, and that is where my interest in the history of the pub and Brunswick Town began.

St Andrew’s Church

St Andrew’s Church is opposite The Iron Duke and I remember watching the last wedding to be held there before it was closed. Now the church has re-opened and has been totally restored by the Churches Conservation Trust. It has become a very well-used community venue. I am now a committee member of the  Friends of St Andrews website.

An occasional drink

The Iron Duke had a somewhat ‘colourful’ reputation when we took it over, we worked very hard to turn it into a friendly family pub and after three successful years there we ‘retired’. To recover we bought a small boat in Turkey and lived on it for a further three years. Nowadays I am again enjoying an occasional drink in my ‘old pub’.
