Nurse Training Prospectus

Covered all aspects of the training

These photographs show the prospectus sent to those who wanted to train to become State Registered Nurses at the Hospital. It set out all aspects of the training including working hours; a 48 hour week and night duty was 8pm -8am five nights on two off the first week, and four nights on and three off the second week, (with the period of a night duty lasting 12 weeks at a time) and activities in classroom and practical training rooms. It also gave details of uniforms, recreation facilities and general conditions.

Take home pay of £16 a month

The yearly salary for student nurses was £220 in the first year (at todays RPI value this would be £4,940) the second year this went up to £240 and in the final year to £260. However after tax the monthly cheque for those living outside the hospital was approximately £16, (about £360 at todays RPI). But as first year students had to live in the nurses home (now pulled down) after the living in charges were deducted from the £16, they received a cheque for £8.

Over thirty years of training nurses

The training to SRN at the Brighton General covered the period from the mid 40s up to the reorganisation of nurse training in the early 70s, which none of the nurses who trained prior to the change think was a good thing. See also the web site www.communigate.co.uk/sussex/brightongeneralsrn
