Class photo c1953/1955

This is a photograph I recently found of  a Downs County Primary School class. I am really not sure whether it is Class 1A, 2A or 3A.

As to date it is either 1953/1954/1955. My wife Christine Bivand (nee Storry) is in the photograph, 3rd row up, 3rd from right.

If anyone can help with the class and dates, or can identify themselves or anyone else, please leave a comment below.

  • Nice pic! A fine addition to MYB&H’s growing library of Downs class photos from the 50s and 60s. I recognise quite a few of the faces in this one as my former classmates – they can be found, a little older, in other pics in these pages. I’m not in this picture, but whether that’s because I made a late start at the school (because of a disability I was unable to walk properly till I was five and was a year late starting, and eventually had to “jump” a year in the Infants), or because the classes were reorganised at some stage, I have no idea.

  • I am struggling with this one! Graham Pitney, front row, 2 from right. Michael Bellis, second row, extreme right. Dennis Hunt, second row, extreme left. Susan Genin, third row, extreme left. Francis Ward, third row, 2 from left.

  • The 2 boys top row right are Stephen Pratt and Barry Simmonds. The boy on the top left, I think, is John Isle, the boy second row second from left with tie, I think, is John Cosham.  Have to dig out my old photos. The two boys on top right were in my class after this. This could have been a higher class as I know Dennis Hunt was higher.
