The caption for the photograph says a lot really. One could walk almost anywhere with no fear of traffic producing a sudden ending! When at school in the 1930s we as schoolchildren would be warned at certain times of the year that we had to be careful because the Brighton Races would be causing an increase in traffic amounting to 500 cars per hour!
