The photographer, George Ruff, specialised in images of working class children in the early 1900s. Clearly the refreshment in Queens Park available here, was only a large bottle of water, or was it milk and water to be shared out,

Simple enjoyment

I chose this image because it echoed personal memories of visits to Preston Park in Liverpool when I was a child. Like the young girl helping the toddler to a drink, I was responsible for the group of children on our park visits. Like the children in the photograph, we only generally took water; bread and butter very rarely was an extra treat. But as in our 1950s outings, these children enjoyed their simple park excursions; the passing of 50 years changed little.
