The Hangleton & Knoll 50+ Community Garden
50+Garden Group
For many years the Hangleton and Knoll 50+ Steering Group had supported a 50+Garden Group, growing vegetables in a local resident’s garden. Sadly the owner died and for a few years we were unable to find a suitable plot. Then in June 2014 the Manager (Sarah Lines) of the Wayfield Avenue Resource Centre (a Council run Residential Care Home) offered us a plot in their garden. It was separate from their residents’ garden, had been left for some time and was an eyesore which Sarah had to look at every day from her first floor office. We jumped at the opportunity.
Now a fantastic vegetable plot
Over the winter of 2014 the garden, having been once cleared, stood idle. But at the instigation of the chairman Keith Mason, he and one or two committee members and volunteers decided the make an effort to complete the landscaping, including the terraces, so that the plot, now ready for planting, would attract gardeners. Finally, in the spring of 2015 we were ready to start planting and that year we were thrilled, as the wasteland was transformed into a fantastic vegetable plot, with produce being shared with the volunteers and the Hangleton and Knoll 50+ Lunch Club.
